Hands up—I too choose to live as a Westerner in Thailand. From what I eat and the TV I watch, to the cultural nuances and habits I’ve retained from my upbringing in the UK.
Many expats are attracted by a better lifestyle and making their money stretch further, without being fully immersed in the Thai way of life. I’m certainly not suggesting this is wrong, but it is interesting.
It creates this bizarre, brilliant bubble where you can spend your morning navigating a chaotic local market, and your afternoon sitting in a westernised mall eating a Sunday roast and streaming Premier League football. We love the tropical backdrop, but we still crave our home comforts.
