You owe it to yourself to experience Songkran in its modern guise—as one massive, country-wide water fight—at least once. What began as a tradition of respecting elders by gently pouring water over their hands has transcended, in major cities, into a giant water battle that can be incredibly fun.

On this occasion, my family and I joined the ‘Wan Lai’ (‘Flowing Day’) Songkran celebrations in Jomtien. This event occurs shortly after the main national Songkran dates, and my kids absolutely loved it. It is unlike anything else in the world; since it happens in mid-April every year, be sure to check the specific dates before traveling—whether you want to join the party or escape it!
