I am a great fan of special Food and Wine Pairings and having spotted an advertisement for Mojjo’s “Mediterranean Wine Journey with World Cuisine”, thought that this was an admirable excuse to visit this establishment.

Mojjo Rooftop Lounge 7 Bar is located on the 32nd floor of the Compass Skyview Hotel , Sukhumvit Soi 24, and offers impressive views of the Bangkok Skyline. It is a relaxed and comfortably decorated Restaurant/Lounge/Bar offering an impressive range of cocktails. I have attended events there previously but this was the first time trying their regular food offers.

The special food and wine evening included 5 food stations offering different tasters of world food. These dishes have been paired with 5 different wines for a total cost of just Thb.790++ per person. Not a bargain but certainly excellent value for money.

Rain was threating to fall so everything was being moved inside, however the staff worked efficiently and whilst the seating comfort left a little to be desired, it was not the restaurants fault. In fact twice we tried to move outside but the weather gods were not in our favour until later in the evening.

The first ‘station’ offered Giant French Puff with homemade Pesto, cheese and champion mushroom. This was light and delicate with subtle flavouring that teased the palate with it’s differing flavours. This was paired with a Pere Ventura Mas Pere Brut Selecció Cava DO. This is a very light Cava blend but indicated the fresh and youthful style of Catalonian Cava.

Next was a beautifully presented and stacked full of seafood, Spanish Paella. Excellent flavours and crunchy fresh seafood. Paired with an Aimery Maitres Vigneronns Chardonnay, an excellent wine but maybe not perfectly paired with the Paella as the fruits in the nose slightly overpowered the fish. Never the less a lovely pale yellow Chardonnay with a lighter flavour that the normal buttery Chardonnays.

Next stop in our journey was delectable Italian Chicken Pâté on super thin home-made biscuits. Excellent flavour and superbly paired with the La Guardiense Janare Falanghina del Sannio DOP. This was my personal ‘wine of the evening’. A straw yellow, fruity bouquet of good intensity. Acidity increased progressively providing a balanced and refreshing flavour. Great pairing.

South African Chicken Bunny Chow was new to me! Maybe not the finest presentation, especially for someone who is supposedly on a diet, but most surprising tastes. The puffs were crispy and light and the fillings delicious and spicy. Note to self, must try these again! Paired with a Francois Vollard Cháteau La Tour de Béraud, a blend of Carignan/Marselan and Syrah/Grenache producing a complex wine with fruitiness, roundness and full bodied flavour. The Bunny Chow was quite spicy(nice) and the wine handled this strong flavour well. Look out for this wine, it is complex and very interesting to drink!
