Having spent a year living in Hua Hin I was able to get a good feel of the eating out scene there. The small town is blessed with a huge number of eateries, and let’s not forget all the four and five-star hotels that offer wonderful buffets too!
I wanted to focus though more on the independent venues that I enjoyed spending time at. All of these listed I visited numerous times as they all had me coming back for more based on quality and price.
There are many more restaurants I ate at and really enjoyed, but I had to draw a line on how many I listed below.
If it was the weekend then 9 times out of 10 you would find me at Tamarind food market in Takiab. It offered the complete holiday feel with a nice ambience, live music and wonderful selection of both Western and Thai food. You must try the Ribs and mash potato! Just next door to Tamarind is Cicada market which again has a very good food court.
Sticking in the Takiab region, I was very impressed with Ian’s Restaurant. Set within a house, Ian – the chef – has created a beautiful setting and his cooking is exemplary. The place you go to treat a loved one.
If you head 10minutes south of Takiab you will find my favourite restaurant in the Hua Hin region. It is in Khao Tao just by the lake. Kens Bistro is a Thai family-run business and it is just delightful. My family and I would go there at least twice a month to enjoy young Ken’s cooking skills and a bottle of wine. A hidden gem that you just must try!
Located on Soi 112, Zebwar’s was the restaurant I ate at the most. Perfect on so many levels. Firstly it has a huge play area for my kids and secondly, it served the most amazing toad in the hole. They serve Thai and Western and Western food is very good quality. Lots of outside eating ‘booths’ make this well worth the trip.
Also up around this area is the superb everyday English restaurant, May’s Kitchen. Serving lamb kebabs, fish and chips to pie and curries, you would often find me on a Friday evening here!
The Palm Bistro and wine bar (main image above) serve a very good standard of food – you must try their Sunday roast – and always has a good selection of craft beer too.
If you love steaks, you have to visit Prime Steak just opposite the Hilton. It’s top drawer.
Finally, a place that made me feel like I was back in the UK. Father Teds Irish bar on Soi 61 creates that authentic pub feeling and offers good pub grub and plenty of choice on draft beer too.
