For many years, I had wanted to travel to Yasothon in the northeast of Thailand to experience their annual Rocket Festival — a three-day event that includes a vibrant street parade through the city, culminating on the final day with rocket launches aimed at calling on the rain gods.
It was an incredible sight, and my whole family really enjoyed watching the rockets soar high into the sky.
Cultural Explosion in Isaan
The atmosphere throughout the festival was electric. Locals wore traditional Isaan clothing, danced in the streets, and played lively folk music, creating an energy that felt both celebratory and deeply rooted in local beliefs. There was a sense of joy and unity that brought the whole town together, and it was impossible not to get swept up in the excitement.
As we wandered through the parade, we were struck by the creativity of the floats and the pride with which each group presented their designs. Some rockets were elaborately painted and mounted on colourful trucks, while others were carried with ritualistic reverence. The cultural richness of Yasothon came to life through every smile, song, and display of craftsmanship.
On the final day, the crowd gathered at the open fields just outside town to witness the much-anticipated rocket launches. As one rocket after another thundered into the clouds, people cheered, hoping for good fortune and rain for their crops. It wasn’t just a spectacle — it was a meaningful, communal tradition, and being part of it made me feel connected to a side of Thailand that many travellers often miss.
