On the British Embassy grounds you will find a majestic building that dates back to 1986 when the British consul first was posted in Bangkok. It was only in 1947 that it was established as an embassy.
In 2017 it was confirmed that the land had been sold to the central group in a record breaking £420 million sale, the biggest property sale in history.
The British Embassy is still open in this location and for me, given the news of its impending closure, a real privilege to attend their frequent functions. So, when my wife and I were invited to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, I jumped at the chance.
It was every bit a quintessentially English event as could be expected, complete with roast beef and Yorkshire puddings to Pimms and gin and tonics! Lovely, even the plug sockets were English three pin. When it briefly rained for one moment I actually believed I was back in the UK.
The Royal Wedding celebration at the embassy was a wonderful affair and it was nice to see a different mixture of people at this particular function – it was much more family orientated than usual, and that included children too.
